House building update: Floors, cabinets and paint — oh my!

I can’t believe I can say that we will be moving into our new home in just a matter of weeks! It felt like so long ago when we signed the papers putting us under contract, and in less than a month the place will be done and then we’ll be closing and making what feels like the most adult decision ever.

There was still snow on the ground and not even a hint of foundation when we first when to visit what we called our “expensive dirt.” But now, we’re basically just waiting on finishing touches. We just got our email from the builders yesterday confirming our completion date and final warranty details. It’s all so surreal.

Understandably, I’m a little nervous that we’re even making this decision. As I mentioned in my first home update, buying a home didn’t even seem like a possibility a year ago. Now here we are. I don’t think I’ll really believe it until we get the keys and start putting things on the walls.

Here’s what’s been going on since my last update:

Floors

Soon after the last update, most of our flooring was put in. We’re still waiting on the carpet, but we got our vinyl and laminate in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Carpet is going to be one of the last things, so once that goes in things will really start to feel final.

I also had a transom put in above the pantry, and it looks beautiful.

Railing and paint

We chose to put in a special iron railing instead of either leaving it to be a half wall or a wooden railing option. Once the paint was all finished — a white trim and light, warm grey — the railing was finally installed. It’s actually what I’ve been the most excited to see, and I’m happy to say that I love it. so. much.

Cabinets

You know things are getting close once the cabinets go in! I chose to go with darker cabinets to give a little contrast to the otherwise quite light palette. The countertops are also a bit darker, and those should be going in as I write this. (Ah!)

I do like how they look, and I think it lends to the type of decor and slightly more rustic, Italian vibe I plan on going with.

What’s next?

As I mentioned, the countertops should be going in right now. Then we’ve got appliances, lighting and starting up on the finishing touches - carpets and door hardware.

I can’t believe we’re only a couple weeks out from moving in, but every time we go to visit, I get more excited to turn it into our home. Last week I even made a trip to Home Depot to get some planters to keep on the patio!
